Opel GT (1969)
Opel GT 1969
A car that doesn’t just attract attention — it stops people in their tracks.
Some cars simply exist.
Others build their story with every mile, every event, and every glance from people who stop to admire them.
This Opel GT unquestionably belongs to the latter.
Introduced in 1968, the Opel GT was a true revolution for the German manufacturer. Designed as a compact two-seat sports coupé, it combined bold styling, driving pleasure, and a silhouette that remains one of the most iconic in Opel history. Inspired by the legendary Chevrolet Corvette, it quickly earned the nickname “Baby Corvette” — and for good reason.
OPEL GT 1969
Fully restored example with history, character, and presence at major classic motoring events.
The car presented here underwent a comprehensive restoration carried out by a master craftsman with more than 40 years of experience in rebuilding classic automobiles. Every detail was recreated with exceptional care and respect for originality.
The result is a car that impresses equally during a relaxed countryside drive or at the most prestigious automotive events in Poland.
This is not an anonymous classic hidden away in a garage.
This Opel GT actively participates in major motoring gatherings and classic car events — a recognisable car that constantly draws attention and admiration.
Classic engineering and pure analog driving emotion
Under the hood of this 1969 example sits a 1.9-liter inline-four CIH (Camshaft in Head) gasoline engine producing approximately 102 horsepower (SAE).
Thanks to its lightweight construction and compact proportions, the Opel GT reaches a top speed of around 185 km/h (115 mph), while 0–100 km/h takes approximately 11 seconds — an impressive figure for the late 1960s.
Power is delivered through a 4-speed manual gearbox driving the rear wheels, creating an engaging and authentic classic driving experience.
Weighing under 1,000 kilograms, the GT offers remarkably agile handling and an exceptional feeling of lightness behind the wheel, despite being based on components from the Opel Kadett B.
Headlights unlike anything else on the road
One of the Opel GT’s most recognisable features is its unique manually operated rotating headlights. Unlike conventional pop-up headlights, they rotate horizontally in sync when activated via a lever inside the cabin.
Even among sports cars of its era, this solution was highly unusual — and it still gives the Opel GT a futuristic appearance today.
European design with American success
The bodywork was designed by the Opel Design Studio team in Rüsselsheim with significant involvement from young designer Erhard Schnell. Body production took place in France by Chausson and Brissonneau & Lotz, while final assembly was completed in Germany.
Although the Opel GT was a European sports car, its greatest commercial success came in the United States. Sold through Buick dealerships, it became highly popular thanks to its sporty styling, attractive pricing, and reliability.
Out of 103,463 units produced, more than 70% were exported overseas.
Today, the Opel GT produced between 1968 and 1973 has become a true collector’s item. Its distinctive styling, rarity, and fascinating engineering solutions make it highly desirable among collectors worldwide.
